Invincible 

 

The conclusion to the first season.  Omni-Man and his son, Mark- both super beings put at odds to destroy earth and to save it. Amber and Mark hit a rough patch while Robot hatches plans of his own and Cecil Stedman continues to pull stings to do what he can to try and stop Omni-Man after learning it was he who killed Earth's defenders.  Animation is still as strong as ever and the voice cast leaves nothing to be desired.  (9/10)

 

Army of the Dead

 

Zack Snyder is no stranger to Zombie films as he did 2004's Dawn of the Dead.  You'd be right to expect more from him on Army of the Dead.  You'd also be let down. 

Army of the Dead has a host of problems- unanswered plot threads, characters missing in scenes, a ludicrous plot that sabotages itself with massive inconsistencies, etc.  BUT is IS Zack Snyder making an enjoyable film with Dave Bautista and Zombie cats.  Fun is a factor and does help to save this one.  (4/10)

Those Who Wish Me Dead

 

Taylor Sheridan is a name to follow.  Hell or High Water. Wind River. Sicario. Sicario: Day of the Soldado.  

Those films should ring bells for you and for good reasons.  They're fantastic.  Wind River being 10/10 easy if not more.  

Cut to Those Who Wish Me Dead.  A Slow burn in a 99 minute shell.  A man and his family become targeted for assassination and when they are attacked on the open road, his son escapes into the forest only to run into a woman on fire watch while still being chased by two government trained assassins.  

Good cast and solid performances by people who do well in their respective rolls.  Angelina isn't a show stopper but pretty good.  Aidan Gillen and Nicholas Hoult and Jon Bernthall are also great with Finn Little as a newcomer also holding his own.  A solid movie.  Available theatrically or HBOMax. (5.5/10)

 

Spiral

 

2004.  Saw started a absolute legacy of horror turn torcher gore films to come.  Two really great ones and five below average ones with a rogue "Jigsaw" movie and the more recent "Spiral" movies.  That said, Jigsaw is dead and was only alive for 3 of the original 7 films, yet made an appearance in all of them.  Jigsaw (Saw 2004) was brilliant.  As Saw went on, Jigsaw became less so, forced and spoon-fed as exposition.  Spiral is a step in the right direction for a Saw revival franchise.  Much of the original atmosphere is kept intact along with much of what made Saw, Saw.  The voice is not the same, nor is the mascot but both effective and menacing when put together.  If you're a Saw fan, Spiral is for you.  (4,10),(6/10)

Invincible

 

Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dad) brings us another comic book worth adapting to the big screen.  He hits another home run with Invinsible- A very adult story about superheroes around the world.  We focus on Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun)- A young teenager who's father (J.K.Simons) is the most powerful superhero on the planet (think Superman).  Mark is coming into his powers while also dealing with earth invasions, school bullies and girls.  Also listed- Sandra Oh, Walton Noggins, Zachary Quinto, Clancy Brown, Mark Hamill, Mahershala Ali, Jon Hamm, Seth Rogen, Jeffrey Donovan, Djimon Hounsou, Ezra Mller, Lennie James and Sean Patrick Thomas.  Hell of a voice cast.

Beautifully antimated in an old style animation, Invincible is one that you should not miss if you are a fan of the comic book genre or superheroes in general. (9/10)

 

Wrath of Man

 

Guy Ritchie Certainly has his own genre of movies at this point and to that end, you know exactly what you're going to get.  Wrath of Man is a clever, well written, well paced quick action thriller about a man getting revenge. Told in the Ritchie / Tarantino war of jumping around in time storytelling, Wrath sets up very well a long ending sequence involving and heist, shoutout, and car chase.  Jason Statham is am absolute integral to the puzzle as not many guys would fit the character as well.  

Wrath of Man is every bit a reason or excuse you may need to return to the movie theater and splurge on the popcorn and drink staples there.  (8/10)

The Mitchells vs the Machines 

 

Sony Animation Studios has a very good product on there hands.  One of the strongest animated films outside of Pixar in a long time.  

Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Eric Andre, Olivia Coleman, Johnn Legend, Conan O'Brien all give a great performance in this fact paced action with some emotion mixed in.  A wonderful and newer animation style mixed with visuals on the screen make sure you are never bored while Monchi the dog and the family's new two robot friends are constantly making you laugh every few minutes with smart jokes and clever writing that seems to never get old.  Everything about this one is 2021 relevant with an evil Apple ripoff the main villain.  Don't miss this. (9/10)

 

Tom Clancy's Without Remorse

 

The Tom Clancy universe is well know.  Jack Ryan takes a break on this outing and jives his counterpart John Kelly a chance to shine.  

Michael B Jordan is John kelly- an elite Navy Seal is set on a 6th to find his wife's killer only to find the conspiracy goes much deeper than surface level- as is par the course with most Tom Clancy.  The gunplay and choreography are good, though NOT John Wick or Nobody level, unfortunately. (Perhaps we were too spoiled by those.). Guy Pierce and Jamie Bell also appear along side Jordan in an action thriller that, unfortunately, leaves a little to be desires.  Watch past the credits for our introduction to the Rainbow 6 team.

Stowaway

Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, Shamier Anderson, Toni Collette.  Four cast members.  All pretty strong performances to help this Sci-Fi stay afloat when, at times, it's close to really running out of gas (or oxygen). A mission to Mars takes a very unexpected turn when a lunch engineer is knocked unconscious and trapped inside a panel and discovered 12 hours after launch.

Stowaway does a few things right- Really brings morality font and center as a theme explored heavily- really gives weight to a decision to have one of the crew members stop using supplies and, more importantly, oxygen.  It's an odd thing to have a film with more than one great moment and Stowaway has three.  Well worth the 1:45 investment.  (6.5/10)

 

Mortal Kombat

 

1995 and 1997 gave us Mortal Kombat movies which we remember fondly.  Mortal Kombat (2021) has upped the ante a little bit with decades of improved CGI and digital effects.  This is a MK film in the MK universe and it feels good and more like what we deserved decades ago for this franchise.  Josh Lawson's Kano is well worth the ticket price and will have you belly laughing many times.  Scorpion and Sub Zero feel and look as any fan would want.  Fans of the game franchise will be very happy with Mortal Kombat as are your mid 90's selves if they could have seen this in the SNES and Sega days.  Finish Him! (4.5/10)
